The Battle of Palo Alto - May 8, 1846

The Battle of Palo Alto was the first major battle of the Mexican-American War, fought on May 8, 1846, near present-day Brownsville, Texas.

U.S. forces under Zachary Taylor (2,300 troops) defeated Mexican forces under Mariano Arista (3,400 troops) using superior artillery.

The victory allowed Taylor's army to advance and engage Mexican forces again the next day at Resaca de la Palma.
