Saint Petersburg
Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 by
Peter the Great.
It was the capital of the Russian Empire
from 1712 - 1918. In March 1918, Moscow became the capital of
the USSR.
From 1914 to 1924, Saint Petersburg
was officially called Petrograd.
From 1924 to 1991, the city was again
renamed, this time Leningrad.
Today, we're back to Saint Petersburg.
Major events took place in Saint
Petersburg, e.g. the
Russian Revolution of 1917.
