The Helvetii,
also called the Helvetians, were a Celtic tribe.
The
Celts, in turn and much
simplified, were those Europeans who lived anytime BC.
The Helvetii had their original stomping grounds in southern
Germany. During the 2nd century BC they shuffled south and settled
in the area of today's Switzerland.
Bad year in the history of the
Helvetii was 58 BC when they fought against Julius Caesar in the
Battle of
Bibracte and lost big.
Welcome to the
Gallic Wars.
Bibracte, by the way, is today's Mont
Beuvray in France.
