PRONOUNCE TARTAR
Also spelled Tartars.
The Tatars were, and still are, people
who speak a Turkic language, which is a subfamily of the Altaic
languages.
Back in the days of
Genghis Khan,
Turkic nomads joined the Mongols. Their mixed army, aka the
Golden Horde, invaded Europe
and was called the Tatars.
The pros of etymology believe that the
word Tatar derives from Tata, a name of the Mongols
for themselves.
