Thirty-seven members of the MacDonald
family of Glencoe were killed by soldiers under the command of
John Dalrymple.
John's career suffered only a minor bump
in 1695 when he had to resign because of his involvement in the
Glencoe Massacre.
By 1703 he was back up and running and became the
earl of Stair.
The background of this massacre was the
loyalty of the MacDonald family to former king
James II.
