Lombard League 1167-1183
To protect themselves from Holy Roman Emperor
Frederick I
Barbarossa, some communes in Lombardy, northern Italy, came
together in the year 1167 and founded the Lombard League.
The League fought and defeated the
emperor at the
Battle of Legnano in 1176.
This led to the
Peace of Constance in
1183, which made the League redundant.
