Confederation of the Rhine 1806-1813
The Confederation of the Rhine
was the Confédération du Rhin in French and the Rheinbund
in German.
The Rheinbunds-Akte was
signed in Paris on July 12, 1806. Here is the
German
transcript.
Napoleon promised the small German states riches, glory, and
territorial expansion if they would aid him in his fight against
Prussia and Austria.
Originally, sixteen states joined the
Confederation of the Rhine and left the
Holy Roman
Empire, which collapsed on August 6, 1806. More states joined later.
