Texan Barbara Charline Jordan was the first African American
in Congress from the South. And yet, she was so much more.
On July 25, 1974, Barbara Jordan
delivered the opening statement of the impeachment proceedings
against
President Richard Nixon.
The proceedings were conducted by the Committee on the Judiciary,
aka the lawyer for the House of Representatives. Jordan's speech was
nationally televised.
On July 12, 1976, Barbara Jordan
had the opportunity to impress with her diplomatic skills when she delivered her Keynote Address
at the Democratic National Convention.
