Chiang Kai Shek 1887-1975
Chiang Kai-shek, or
Chiang Chung-cheng, or
Chiang Chieh-shi, started out as a soldier.
He joined the Chinese Nationalist Party,
or Kuomintang, in 1918.
When the head of the party,
Sun
Yat-sen, died in 1925, Chiang Kai-shek became the new party
leader.
In 1927, he crushed the revolution in
Shanghai and set up his own government in Nangking.
In 1928, Chiang Kai-shek organized the
second expedition to the north.
In 1943, Chiang Kai-shek became
president of China.
In 1949,
Mao
Zedong and his men took over and Chiang Kai-shek's
team was exiled to Taiwan.
