Francis' German name was
Franz Joseph.
His family was the powerful
Habsburg
Dynasty.
Francis Joseph I was emperor of Austria from 1848 until 1916. He
succeeded to the throne when his uncle
Ferdinand I the Benign
abdicated in his favor.
Starting with the year 1867, Francis was also king of Hungary,
because he split his Empire into Austria and Hungary. The exact date was
June 8.
Francis Joseph's great-nephew
Charles I (German: Karl I)
followed him to the throne.
