Geoffrey Howe (born 1926)
Sir Geoffrey Howe was born in Aberavon, Wales, and was
Margaret Thatcher's
famous right
hand.
On the personality scale, Geoffrey Howe
occupied the opposite end of sparkly and fascinating.
From 1979 to 1983, Howe was Chancellor of the Exchequer.
From 1983 to 1989, Howe was Foreign Secretary, after which he became
Lord President and Leader of the House, aka Deputy Prime Minister.
On November 13, 1990, Howe delivered his
Resignation Speech to the House
of Commons, which is said to have hastened the end of Thatcher's
reign.
