Geronimo 1829-1909
Geronimo's Indian name was Goyathlay,
which means One who Yawns. The big yawner was born in No-Doyohn Canyon, Mexico.
Geronimo was of the Apache tribe and
fought against the Spaniards and North Americans who
had their minds set on taking over his people's lands.
In 1858, Geronimo's mother, wife, and
children were killed by Mexicans. That was a turning point in Geronimo's
life and he started bringing vengeance upon oppressors of any kind.
His enemies came after him and, in September 1886, tricked him and
his 18 men into giving
themselves up.
However, Geronimo was able to compile his autobiography.
