Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo ?-1543
Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo was originally João Rodrigues Cabrilho,
because he was Portuguese, born in Portugal.
He worked for the Spanish as a soldier,
discoverer, oyster fisher, explorer, and conquistador.
In 1520, Juan was busy conquering Mexico
and Guatemala.
On September 28, 1542, Juan discovered
San Diego Bay and was henceforth the famous Discoverer of
California. He landed at Point Loma Head, which is now part of
the
Cabrillo
National Monument.
