Marcus Aurelius was Marcus Annius Verus until the year 161 when he became
Roman emperor Caesar Marcus
Aurelius Antoninus Augustus.
He remained emperor until
his death.
167-176
A long and desperate war between Rome and a great
confederacy of the German nations ensued. Marcus Antoninus at last succeeded
in repelling them.
Succession
In 177, Marcus Aurelius made his son
Commodus joint emperor. He
became Marcus' successor at his father's death in 180.
