William Hamilton 1730-1803
Sir
William Hamilton was a British diplomat and archaeologist. From 1764
to 1800 he lived in Naples, Italy.
William's famous second wife,
Lady Emma Hamilton, became
mistress of the even more famous
Admiral Horatio Nelson during William's term as ambassador
to Naples.
William Hamilton nurtured an
archaeological fascination of the volcano
Vesuvius. He hiked
up, down, and across this
mountain many times, arranged for a painter to capture the eruptions,
and sent rock samples back to England.
William's father, Lord Archibald Hamilton, was governor of
Jamaica from 1711 - 1716.
