Caesar's Campaigns in Gaul - The Gallic Wars

Illustrating:

Gallic Counter-Attack

The Gauls, under the direct command of Vercingetorix, launched a fierce counter-attack. They streamed out of the city gates and down from the higher ground, hitting the Roman forces with considerable force. This was greatly aided by the Gauls' superior knowledge of the terrain.

The Romans, caught between the fortifications and the attacking Gallic warriors, began to lose cohesion.
