John L. Lewis 1880-1969
John Llewellyn Lewis was born in Iowa.
A 1989 Labor Hall of Fame Honoree, John
L. Lewis is listed as
A Colossus of American Labor
and rightly so.
Lewis was the founder as well as the
first president of the C.I.O. which stands for Congress of
Industrial Organizations.
Thus fighting for the workers, Lewis
gave annually a radio speech on Labor Day. On September 6, 1937, he
delivered his famous
The Rights of
Labor address.
