March 9, 1814
Treaty of Chaumont.
This is a treaty of alliance between Austria, Great Britain,
Prussia, and Russia, who vow to stick together against their common
enemy, France.
April 3, 1814
The new French Defense Minister is
Pierre, Comte Dupont de l'Étang.
He succeeds Henri-Jacques-Guillaume Clarke.
April 6, 1814
Napoleon
signs his abdication.
Louis XVIII takes the reigns.
This is Napoleon's first abdication. He will be back
and announce his second and final abdication on June 22, 1815.
The
Peninsular War ends. It had begun
on May 2, 1808.
April 12, 1814
Napoleon
tries to commit suicide with the help of poison. But he just gets a
sick stomach during the night.
April 13, 1814
Napoleon
signs the Treaty of Fontainebleau.
April 20, 1814
Napoleon
delivers his
Farewell to the Old Guard speech.
April 24, 1814
Louis XVIII arrives on the French mainland.
April 28, 1814
At Fréjus,
Napoleon
boards the Undaunted, a British frigate, which will bring him
to Elba.
May 3, 1814
Louis XVIII arrives in Paris. The
First Bourbon Restoration
begins.
May 4, 1814
Napoleon
arrives at his exile destination, Elba. He disembarks at
Portoferraio.
May 30, 1814
First Peace of Paris, or
First Treaty of Paris.
Peace treaty between France and the Allies (Portugal, Austria,
Prussia, Great Britain, Russia, and Sweden). Spain will sign a
separate treaty with France on July 20, 1814.
The First Peace of Paris defined
French borders as the ones that were in place in 1792.
However, because of Napoleon's return,
a Second Peace of Paris will become necessary. It will be
signed on November 20, 1815. This second treaty will carry harsher
terms for France than the first treaty.
June 4, 1814
Last day in office for the Corps Législatif. It had been in
effect since January 1, 1800.
The Constitutional Charter (Charte
Constitutionnelle) is adopted.
July 20, 1814
Spain and France sign a peace treaty at Paris.
September 18, 1814
The
Congress of Vienna assembles.
Not all delegates have arrived yet. This congress will convene until
June 9, 1815.
December 3, 1814
The new French Defense Minister is
Jean de Dieu Soult, Duc de Dalmatie.
He succeeds Pierre, Comte Dupont de l'Étang.
December 24, 1814
The
Treaty of Ghent
ends the
War of 1812. However, it will
take a while until the news of this treaty reaches every soldier
involved. In the meantime, the war will go on until February 17,
1815.
