PRONOUNCE GLASNOST
Glasnost, meaning openness,
was a political course of action practiced and promoted in the
Soviet Union by
Mikhail Gorbachev.
People were now allowed to openly
discuss and criticize their government. Also, other countries that
used to be enemies of the Soviet Union during the
Cold War
were now approached differently.
PRONOUNCE PERESTROIKA
Tied together with glasnost was
perestroika, which means restructuring
or reconstruction.
Perestroika describes the many political and economic reforms that
followed.
This is how we
define perestroika in hindsight. However,
it meant different things to different people,
and some people even defined it differently at
different times.
