Huerta, Obregon, and Calles
join forces and proclaim the Republic of
Sonora.
April 23, 1920
Alvaro Obregon
announces the Plan of Agua Prieta.
Among other things, the Plan of Agua
Prieta states that
Venustiano Carranza
has betrayed the
Constitution of 1917 and that he, |
Obregon, was abandoning his presidential campaign.
Instead, weapons would
have to be taken up to "safeguard the virtues which government is
seeking by arms to destroy."
May 7, 1920
Most former supporters have switched their loyalty from
Venustiano Carranza
to
Álvaro Obregón.
With bunches of booty and everything he could stuff into
trains, Carranza flees Mexico City for Veracruz.
But people are on his heels, close
in on him, stop his train, and finally
Carranza has to leave his booty behind. He and a handful of men
manage to escape and they continue on horseback direction northern
Puebla.
May 9, 1920
Alvaro Obregon
enters Mexico City together with Zapatistas.
May 20/21, 1920
General Rodolfo Herrero assassinates
Venustiano Carranza at Tlaxcalantongo, Puebla,
while attempting to flee to Veracruz.
May 24, 1920
Carranza's funeral at 4 PM
in Mexico City.

Presidential elections scheduled. Adolfo de la Huerta is
interim president from June 1 until November 30, 1920.
August 31, 1920
Villa agrees to retire and does so on his recently purchased estate,
a former hacienda at La Purísima Concepción de El Canutillo,
Durango.
December 1, 1920
Álvaro Obregón
elected new president of Mexico.
