Treaty of San Ildefonso 1800
On October 1,
1800, the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso was
signed between France and Spain.
With this treaty the Spanish
agreed to retrocede the Louisiana territory to France.
This treaty was a
preliminary agreement and was confirmed with the
Convention of Aranjuez,
signed March 21, 1801.
In 1803, however,
Napoleon decided
to sell on. The States obtained Louisiana from France via the
Louisiana Purchase.
