Bettye Naomi Goldstein was born
in Illinois.
In 1963, she wrote
The Feminine
Mystique.
In 1966, she was one of the founding
members of NOW, which stands for National Organization for Women.
On January 27, 1970, U.S. Court of
Appeals (Fifth Circuit) Judge George Harrold Carswell had his
Hearing regarding his nomination as Associate Justice to the Supreme
Court.
On the occasion, and representing NOW,
Betty Friedan gave her
Carswell Testimony in which she opposed Carswell's
appointment.
Carswell was rejected by Senate with a
51-45 vote, packed his knapsack, and settled at Tallahassee,
Florida, where he opened his private practice.
