Clement III ?-1191
Clement's real name was Paolo Scolari and he was Roman by
birth.
Clement III was pope from 1187 until 1191. Before becoming pope, Paolo
Scolari was cardinal-bishop of Palestrina.
Palestrina, by the way, is located
here (see red star):
PALESTRINA, ITALY
It was October 1187 when
Saladin and
fellow Muslims re-captured Jerusalem.
In December 1187, Paolo Scolari was made
pope. As Pope Clement III, he put the
Third Crusade on the menu, which
unfortunately for him turned out to be basically for the birds.
In 1188, Clement
III switched the status of the Scottish Church from being under the
jurisdiction of the English See of York to being directly under Rome's
control.
