Guy Fawkes 1570-1606
Guy Fawkes was a British military
man and a conspirator in the Gunpowder Plot which was designed
to blow up Westminster Palace.
Why Westminster Palace?
More specifically, Guy Fawkes and his
buddies planned on blowing up
King James I
and the Parliament in 1605 because James was ultra anti-Catholic.
However, the plot didn't work because on
the night of November 4 / 5, 1605, royal intelligence discovered the
entire thing along with 36 barrels of gunpowder that were nicely
draped under the Palace of Westminster where Parliament was due to
meet.
Once apprehended, and due to
inflicted persuasion, Mr. Fawkes sang like a bird. So much so, in fact, that he signed two
confessions.
Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators were
executed January 30 and 31, 1606, and England turned even more
anti-Catholic.
The British, always ready for a reason
to raise a good pint, remember this event with their annual
fireworks and bonfires on November 5 —
Guy Fawkes Day.
V for Vendetta was a 2005 movie with Clive Ashborn as Guy
Fawkes.
