Stokely Carmichael 1941-1998
Carmichael was born in Port of Spain,
Trinidad. He later changed his name to Kwame Toure.
Stokely Carmichael moved to NYC in 1952.
In 1968, he married Mama
Africa, Miriam Makeba. The two divorced in 1979.
On June 16, 1966, Stokely Carmichael
declared that he was done with non-violence and made the phrase
Black Power popular when the March Against Fear had reached
Greenwood, Mississippi.
This event was initiated by James
Meredith, who in 1962 had become the first African American
student at the University of Mississippi.
On October 29, 1966, Stokely Carmichael
visited Berkeley University, CA, and gave his
Black Power Speech.
