Thabo Mbeki (born 1942)
Thabo Mbeki was born in Idutywa, today's
South Africa.
In 1994,
President Nelson Mandela made
Mbeki Deputy President.
On May 8, 1996, Mbeki had a poet for breakfast, after which he
delivered his
I Am an African speech at Cape Town. He made this
statement on behalf of the ANC on the occasion of the adoption by
the Constitutional Assembly of the Republic of South Africa
Constitution Bill 1996.
From 1999 to 2008, Mbeki was South
Africa's President.
Mbeki was under fire for being of the
opinion that AIDS was caused by poverty, not by a virus.
