Who Fought?

North Vietnam vs. South Vietnam

In detail:

Communist government of North Vietnam,
Viet Cong of South Vietnam, Soviet Union, China

vs.

Government of South Vietnam,
United States, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand.

 

Why Did They Fight?

North Vietnam wanted a unified Vietnam with South Vietnam under a communist government. South Vietnam didn't.

 

Who Won the War?

North Vietnam.

 

What Were the Casualties?

North Vietnam lost 2 million civilians and 1.1 million soldiers.

South Vietnam lost 2 million civilians and 250,000 soldiers.

The US lost 58,200 soldiers (some of them Canadians.)

South Korea lost 4,000 soldiers.

Thailand lost 350 soldiers.

Australia lost 500 soldiers.

New Zealand lost 40 soldiers.

Battle of Ap Bac - January 2, 1963

Battle of Ia Drang - November 14-20, 1965

 

On March 16, 1968, U.S. soldiers slaughtered 400 to 500 unarmed civilians in what became known as the My Lai Massacre.
