Why Was the War of the
Oranges Fought?
Portugal,
who was allied with Britain, turned down Napoleon's proposal to get
swallowed whole by France. In consequence, Portugal had to deal with
a French invasion, which commenced on April 16, 1801.
Spain,
who had become France's ally in 1796, followed suit and entered
Portugal on May 19, 1801. The Spanish troops were led by
Manuel de Godoy.
