Charles XIII 1748-1818
Charles, or Karl if you are Swedish, was the son of
King Adolf Frederick of Sweden and the younger brother of
Swedish king
Gustav III.
When Gustav died in 1792, Charles ruled until Gustav's son, the
later Gustav IV, was old enough.
In the eyes of the Swedish people, Gustav IV didn't handle the
Napoleonic Wars satisfactory, so they told him to pack his bags in
1809, which made Charles king of the Swedes.
Therefore, Charles XIII ruled
from 1809 to 1818.
Charles XIII was married to
Hedvig Elisabeth Charlotte of
Oldenburg.
The couple had two children: a
daughter, born in 1797, and a son,
Karl Adolf, born in 1798. Both children died in
childhood.
Charles XIII, thus without heir,
adopted Jean Baptiste Bernadotte
and Parliament decided Bernadotte had what it took to become
Charles' successor.
Bernadotte became
King Charles XIV John,
or Karl XIV Johan if you are Swedish, in 1810.
