Jacques was a French sailor who, sent
by French King
Francis I,
explored the St. Lawrence River. He went three times and thoroughly annoyed the Iroquois
on each occasion.
King
Francis couldn't care less about the Iroquois. He expected the
expedition to come back with plenty of gold and
diamonds, but everything Cartier and his men brought
home turned out to be worthless souvenirs.
This
article from the Ville de Quebec tells you
more about the discovery of Cartier's settlement, Fort
Charlesbourg-Royal at Cap Rouge near Quebec City.
