Mark Twain 1835-1910

Mark Twain is the pen name of Samuel Clemens.

 


His Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are probably his best known works.

 

Our Fellow Savages is the title of Mark Twain's favorite lecture, which he gave many times between 1866 and 1873.

On January 20, 1901, Mark Twain delivered his Votes for Women speech at the annual meeting of the Hebrew Technical School for Girls.

The event took place at the Temple Emmanuel in New York, N.Y.

 

Brief Biography

November 30, 1835 Birth as Samuel Langhorne Clemens at Florida, Missouri to John Marshall and Jane Clemens.
   
1839 Death of sister Margaret.
The family moves to Hannibal, Missouri.
   
1842 Death of brother Benjamin
   
1847 Death of father
   
1848 Apprentice at the Missouri Courier
   
1851 Works for his brother Orion who bought the Hannibal Journal.
   
1853 Works as typesetter in St. Louis
   
1855 Works with his brother in Keokuk, Iowa
   
1857 Apprenticeship on a steamboat under riverboat captain Horace Bixby
   
1858 Brother Henry dies after a boiler explosion on the steamboat Pennsylvania.
   
1859 Obtains his riverboat pilot's license.
Writes River Intelligence.
   
1861 The American Civil War begins.

Joins briefly the Confederate Marion Rangers. Writes later about this stint in his The Private History of the Campaign That Failed (1885).

   
1865 The Civil War ends
   
1869 The Innocents Abroad
   
1870 Marries Olivia Langdon
   
1872 Roughing It
   
1875 Old Times on the Mississippi

The Private History of the Campaign That Failed

Publishes the memoirs of former president Ulysses S. Grant
   
1889 A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
   
1899 Concerning the Jews

Writes as anti-imperialist and in opposition to the Philippine-American War (1899-1902)

   
1900 Meets a young Churchill in New York and lets him know what he thinks about imperialism, be it the British in South Africa or the Americans in the Philippines. Here is more.
   
1904 Wife Olivia dies
   
1905 King Leopold's Soliloquy, in which he puts a spotlight on Belgian King Leopold II's treatment of the Congolese
   
1909 Daughter Jean dies
