Charles became king of Swabia in 876,
king of Italy in 880, and finally emperor in 881.
The
Vikings, by the way, were not
only savage raiders but also savvy business men. In 886, Charles had to pay off the
Vikings so that they would leave Paris alone. Historians are
appalled by this. They say, instead of putting money on the table,
Charles should have fought the Vikings.
Charles was
overthrown by his nephew, Arnulf. The year? 887.

Charles III the Fat was a member of the
Carolingian family, the great-grandson of
Charlemagne, and the son of
Louis II the German.
