Edward the Black Prince 1330-1376
Edward the Black Prince was the son of
Edward III, king of England, and
Philippa of Hainault.
He was called The Black Prince because of his black armor.
During the
Hundred Years' War at the
Battle of Poitiers, the Black Prince managed to capture
French
King John II, whom
he then held prisoner at the Tower of London. The year? 1356.
In 1361, the Black Prince married his
widowed cousin Joan, the Countess of Kent.
Edward the Black Prince was also the
Prince of Aquitaine
from 1362 - 1372.
Edward's son Richard became King of
England in 1377 as Richard II.
Edward's brother was
John of Gaunt.
