Maria Theresa 1717-1780
Maria's mother was Elizabeth of
Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Her father was
Charles VI.
Maria Theresa was an
enlightened despot.

Thanks to her father's Pragmatic Sanction, she inherited quite a bit. But also thanks to
the same document, the
War of the Austrian Succession broke
out.
In 1740, Maria became Archduchess of
Austria as well as queen of Hungary and Bohemia.
In 1736, she married
Francis I,
who reigned as Holy Roman emperor 1745 - 1765, and whom she loved
dearly.
And speaking of offspring...
All in all, Francis and Maria had 16
children. Eleven girls, five boys.
