Shirley Chisholm was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., as Shirley Anita St.
Hill.
Ms Chisholm made history when she became
the first African American woman who was elected to the U.S. Congress.
On May 21, 1969, Shirley Chisholm
delivered her
Equal
Rights for Women speech before the House of Representatives
in Washington D.C.
According to Shirley Chisholm herself,
one of the women that inspired her most, was
Eleanor Roosevelt.
Running for President
Shirley Chisholm also was the first African
American who ran for president of the United States.
