Batavian Republic 1795-1806
While fighting the
War of the First Coalition,
the French invaded the United Provinces of the Netherlands
(Dutch Netherlands.)
In January 1795, Dutch
William V of Orange was
deposed.
On May 16, 1795, the French renamed it
Batavian Republic
(Dutch: Bataafse Republiek)
and kept it, of course, as a close ally and subsequently
drained the Dutch financially to a spectacular degree.
In 1805,
Napoleon I
changed the name from Batavian Republic to
Batavian Commonwealth.
On July 5, 1806, Napoleon proclaimed
the Kingdom of Holland and his brother
Louis
the King of Holland, thus
ending the Batavian Republic / Commonwealth.
