The She-Wolf Who Raised the Founders
of Rome
Governments of Rome

Not
unlike
Baby Moses,
the infant twins
Romulus and
Remus also took an
involuntary cruise
down the river and survived.
In the
twins' case, it was thanks to a
she-wolf who suckled them, until
they were later found by the man Faustulus,
who took them in.
The
twins' biological parents, by the
way, were Mars (Roman god) and Rhea
Silvia, daughter of the king of
Alba
Longa, a city 12 miles / 19 km
southeast of future Rome.
The
twins, of course, would become the
founders of Rome, a city they
decided should be located at the exact
spot where Faustulus had stumbled
upon them.
The
photo above is from the Musei
Capitolini at Rome, where you can
visit the Capitoline She-wolf,
a bronze sculpture from the 5th
century BC and the symbol of Rome.
