January 1, 1808
In the U.S., slavery is officially abolished. Congress had
approved of the
Slave
Trade Act on March 2, 1807. It is in effect as of
today.
March 17, 1808
Revolt of Aranjuez. Spain's prince Ferdinand and his
supporters advise Ferdinand's father, King Charles IV, to consider
retirement.
March 19, 1808
Spanish king Charles IV abdicates. His son, Ferdinand is the
new king as Ferdinand VII.
May 2, 1808
The
Peninsular War begins. It will end
in 1814.
May 6, 1808
Napoleon retires Spanish King Ferdinand VII and makes his
brother, Joseph Bonaparte, King of Spain.
June 4, 1808
Spain, the ones loyal to Ferdinand, declares war on France.
July 4, 1808
Peace treaty between Spain, the ones loyal to Ferdinand, and
Britain.
August 1, 1808
British troops, led by Sir Arthur Wellesley, land in
Portugal.
December 22, 1808
World premiere of Beethoven's Fifth and Sixth Symphonies at
the Theater and der Wien, Vienna.
